Abbot Mark's 2019 Easter Message

April 20, 2019

Dear Friends in Christ,

As we commemorate the Resurrection of the Lord on Easter Sunday, please know of the prayers for you and your intentions, offered by the Benedictine monks of Saint Anselm Abbey.

During our observance of the season of Lent, the monks of our monastery have been focusing on a particular writing of Cardinal Basil Hume, the famed 20thcentury British Benedictine Church leader. Cardinal Hume’s writings on the “monastic instinct” remind us to focus our attention on the proper disposition a monk ought to have both in his large decisions, and in his everyday tasks. It is by focusing on how each one of us must cultivate this instinct that allows us to pray and work as we do here at Saint Anselm. The monastic instinct assists us in making proper choices, and guides us as we attempt to live well this life to which we have vowed ourselves. Living the monastic life well and making proper decisions is so vital to continuing with fervor the work of Catholic higher education that the monks of our community have undertaken over the past 130 years.

As we approach the Easter season of joy of the next several weeks, please know that the monks of Saint Anselm keep all of you, our students, faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, neighbors, and friends, in our daily prayers.  May the Risen Lord Jesus Christ fill your hearts that you may know the Father’s love, and the redemption made possible through the gift of His Son!

PAX

Right Reverend Mark A. Cooper, O.S.B.

Abbot, Saint Anselm Abbey

Chancellor, Saint Anselm College
